Recommended SIM card for local HK data

SoSIM at Watsons

Consider buying this cheap $33 HKD (~$4 USD) SIM card at any Watsons shop in the city. Unfortunately, there is no Watsons in the HK airport. You can buy this with a credit card, cash, etc.

It has 50GB for 30 days in Hong Kong (or, alternatively, you can use it for 5 days of traveling outside HK—but not both inside HK and outside—whichever you use first is what it will be).

Note: You will first need WiFi to activate this card and include a photo of your passport for verification. Hong Kong requires this, it's not just the SIM card asking for it.

Transport Quick Facts

  • How to Pay: Most MTR, buses, and trams accept Visa/Mastercard (tap-to-pay), Octopus card, AliPay, or cash (no change given).
  • Taxis: Cash and some contactless payment, such as AliPay or Octopus - it varies by taxi.
  • Octopus Card: Super useful! Works on transport, in stores, and restaurants. A good backup if cards don’t work. Physical card is easiest. Return it when you leave for a refund.
  • Tourist Day Pass: Usually not worth it. Just pay as you go.
  • Best Apps:
  • 🚌 KMB 1933 – live bus info
  • 📍 Google Maps – good for routes (download offline maps!)
  • How Each Ride Works:
  • Bus: Pay when you get on. No need to tap when exiting.
  • MTR: Tap when entering and exiting. Fare depends on distance.
  • Tram: Just hop on! Pay when you get off. Flat fare: ~$3HKD.

🚆 HK Public Transport

How to Pay for Public Transportation in HK

Most public transportation in Hong Kong accepts Visa and Mastercard credit cards (tap-to-pay). American Express is accepted in some places, but not everywhere. Many methods also accept AliPay and WeChat Pay.

You can always pay with an Octopus card or with cash (but no change is given).

Taxis accept cash, and most now accept contactless payment (however the method of payment accepted may vary by taxi). However, you can use apps (such as Uber) to request rides and pay by credit card through the app.

Should you get an Octopus transportation card?

The Octopus card is a prepaid card used mainly for public transportation (MTR, buses, ferries, minibuses), but you can also use it to pay at convenience stores, supermarkets, restaurants, and more. It's more widely accepted than credit cards and can be very convenient.

You can choose either a physical card or a digital version on your smartphone. (Note: Some visitors have had difficulty setting up the digital version, so the physical card is usually easier.) You can “top up” (add cash) to the physical card at any convenience store—but with cash only, not by credit card. For iPhone users, here is info about the digital Octopus.

Even if you prefer using your credit card for transportation, the Octopus card is helpful as a backup, especially at small local shops, restaurants, or on minibuses, which sometimes accept only cash or Octopus. (Adam sometimes has extra Octopus cards to lend to visitors—just be sure to add money back onto the card afterwards.)

When leaving Hong Kong, you can return your physical Octopus card at the MTR station to get your deposit and any remaining balance back.

Should you get a "Tourist Day Pass" for transport?

While the all-inclusive day pass might sound convenient, it's usually not worth the money. Most visitors don't take enough trips in a single day to justify the cost. It's easier (and cheaper) to just pay as you go with an Octopus card or credit card.

📱 Public transport apps

  • KMB 1933 Bus app - the most useful bus app for the double-decker buses. Download it on iPhone or Android. Google Maps is good at showing bus routes, but it’s usually not very accurate at showing bus times.
  • Google Maps - Pro tip: download a map of the area you plan to visit so that you can easily access it even if you’re offline; here’s how to do it.
  • Other apps such as the MTR (metro) app, Uber, Citymapper, HKTaxi, etc. are all good, but probably not that useful for a short-term visitor.
  • TakeTaxi: This app was actually created by my friend and me, so feel free to try it! It’s useful for translating addresses from English to Chinese, when you want to show a taxi driver where to go. Check it out!

🚌 Buses (Double-decker buses)

  • When boarding a bus, you pay when you first get on. You do not pay or need to tap any cards when you get off the bus.
  • Payment methods: Credit card (tap to pay), Octopus card, Alipay, or cash (no change will be given if you overpay).
  • The cost of the bus ride is determined by where you get on the bus, not how far you are traveling.

🚇 MTR (Metro)

  • When entering the gates of the MTR, you tap/insert to pay when you first enter. You will do the same action again when you leave the MTR.
  • Payment methods: Credit card (tap to pay), Octopus card, Alipay, WeChat Pay, or you may use cash to buy a ticket at the Customer Service booth or ticket machine.
  • The cost of the MTR ride is determined by distance and time.

🚋 Tram (Double-decker tram)

  • When boarding a tram, you do not pay or tap anything—just simply get on the tram at the back entrance. You will pay when you get off.
  • Payment methods: Credit card (tap to pay), Octopus card, Alipay, or cash (no change will be given if you overpay).
  • The cost of the tram ride is a flat-rate fee, no matter how far you go. The fee is 3 HKD (or sometimes 2 HKD if you pay with a Visa credit card).
  • Note: Trams only operate on the HK Island side. Also note that these “normal” trams are different from the Victoria Peak Tram which is only for visiting The Peak and costs more.

🚍 Minibuses (green or red)

  • When boarding a minibus, you pay when you first get on.
  • Payment methods: Octopus card or cash (no change will be given if you overpay).
  • The cost of the bus ride is determined by where you get on the bus, not how far you are traveling.
  • Note: Minibuses sometimes require you to “yell” out to the driver when you want to stop the bus, otherwise the bus might not stop at all. Adam usually recommends the large buses for the average visitor instead of using minibuses.
